The subjects and sizes of my paintings continue to evolve. Currently, my favorite subjects are landscape and still life. I paint landscapes because I love the Virginia countryside and weather. I begin my landscape paintings on location with a thumbnail sketch in which I determine the relationships within the painting. When I begin painting, capturing the quality of the light is my primary focus. The paintings are later finished in the studio. Still life painting allows me to explore and more fully control the formal elements of color, shape and value. For still life paintings, I paint from setups in my studio. I begin with a drawing in vine charcoal that is the same size as the planned painting. Throughout the drawing and painting process, I observe and adjust the relationships between shape, value, and color.
